Helena Bonham Carter, Caitriona Balfe, and Emma Laird Join the Cast of "The Housekeeper"
Prepare for an intriguing cinematic experience with "The Housekeeper," a romance that brings to life the inspiration behind Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel "Rebecca." This film was first mentioned in Variety back in 2024, and it’s now ready to begin production.
Joining the cast are the talented BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter, known for her roles in "The Crown" and "One Life," along with BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Caitriona Balfe, recognized for her performances in "Belfast" and "Ford v Ferrari." Rising star Emma Laird, who has appeared in "The Brutalist" and "28 Years Later," is also on board. They will join the previously announced two-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, famed for his iconic performances in "The Father" and "The Silence of the Lambs." However, earlier cast members Uma Thurman and Phoebe Dynevor will no longer be part of the project.
This film is in the capable hands of Sir Richard Eyre, a multi-award-winning director known for works like "The Children Act" and "Notes on a Scandal." The screenplay is penned by the renowned bestselling author Dame Rose Tremain, who draws inspiration from her own short story and an upcoming novel set to be released by Penguin Random House UK and Harper Collins US in the fall of 2026.
Set against the dramatic and moody backdrop of Cornwall, the narrative follows Danni (played by Balfe), who serves as the housekeeper at Manderville Hall, a lavish estate owned by the affluent and widowed Lord Grenville-Whithers (Hopkins). The plot thickens when young writer Daphne du Maurier (Laird) arrives, leading Danni into a secretive and passionate affair. For one, this romance becomes an all-consuming devotion; for the other, it sparks the resurgence of long-buried desires. Their delicate secret hangs by a thread, especially under the watchful eye of Adelaide (Bonham Carter), Lord Grenville-Whithers’ shrewd niece.
Eyre expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, "Rose Tremain has crafted a brilliant screenplay that is dark, surprising, and mysterious. We are eager to create a film that lives up to its remarkable potential."
Producers Julia Taylor-Stanley from Artemis Films, Kevin Loader from Embankment, and Herbert L. Kloiber from Night Train Media are at the helm of this exciting project. Night Train Media has stepped in as both a producer and the main financier, taking charge of global distribution in collaboration with Embankment Films, who will handle international sales. Additional financial backing comes from Head Gear Films, M2 Mediapost, FireFrame Studios, and Screen Cornwall. Executive producers include Phil Hunt and Compton Ross from Head Gear Films, along with James Copp from Night Train Media.
Taylor-Stanley highlighted the significance of the cast, stating, "Bringing together such an impressive ensemble showcases the strength of Rose’s storytelling and Richard’s esteemed reputation among Britain’s finest directors. We look forward to working with our talented actors to bring this captivating tale to life on screen."
Kloiber added, "The Housekeeper promises to offer viewers a mesmerizing fusion of passion, sophistication, and emotional depth, brought vividly to life through Rose Tremain’s exquisite writing and Richard Eyre’s expert direction."
