A New Hitting Coach for the Rockies: Can They Turn Their Offensive Misfortunes Around?
The Colorado Rockies have made a bold move by hiring former MLB player Brett Pill as their new hitting coach. This appointment comes at a crucial time for the team, following a disastrous 2025 season where they finished with a dismal 43-119 record, ranking last in MLB offensive performance.
Pill, a 41-year-old veteran, brings a wealth of experience to the Rockies' coaching staff. He spent three years as a Double-A hitting coach in the Dodgers' system, followed by a promotion to minor league hitting coordinator in 2023. His most notable playing stint was with the Giants, appearing in 111 MLB games between 2011 and 2013. After his playing career, Pill worked as a scout for his former KBO team before joining the Dodgers.
This is Pill's first major league coaching role, and he steps into a position that has seen a lot of flux in recent years. The Rockies started the 2025 season with Hensley Meulens as their hitting coach, but he was fired early on. Clint Hurdle then took over temporarily, but with the firing of Bud Black and Mike Redmond in May, the coaching responsibilities were divided among Jordan Pacheco and Nic Wilson for the remainder of the season.
The Rockies' offensive struggles are well documented. Despite playing half their games at the hitter-friendly Coors Field, they still managed to finish ahead of only the Pirates in scoring. Their on-base percentage was an MLB-worst .293, largely due to the lowest walk rate in the league (6.7%). The team's performance on the road was particularly abysmal, with a batting line of .203/.259/.330 outside of Denver.
While it's unrealistic to expect a complete turnaround in one offseason, the Rockies are hoping for some process improvements and individual growth from their young players. Ezequiel Tovar, Jordan Beck, and Brenton Doyle (if he remains with the team) are all expected to play key roles in the team's future. The Rockies will also be relying on a repeat performance from their 26-year-old catcher, Hunter Goodman, who was one of the few bright spots in the 2025 season, popping 31 homers with a solid batting line.
