Rocket Lab, a leading space technology company, has been awarded a significant R&D grant by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to develop an advanced reaction wheel for medium-class satellites. This cutting-edge project aims to enhance the capabilities of satellites weighing 500kg to 1,000kg, enabling them to carry larger payloads in low Earth orbit and beyond. The reaction wheel, designed with a minimum angular momentum capacity of 25 Nms, will be a Canadian-made innovation, built upon Rocket Lab's extensive flight heritage. With this funding, Rocket Lab's Toronto facility will lead the development and qualification process, solidifying its position as a key player in Canada's satellite hardware ecosystem.
The CSA's Space Technology Development Program has allocated $999,951 CAD to this project, part of a broader $14.2 million CAD investment in Canadian space innovation. This investment not only supports Rocket Lab's growth but also accelerates the development of Canadian-designed and built space technologies, fostering a robust domestic commercial supply chain. Rocket Lab's President, Brad Clevenger, emphasized the company's commitment to delivering reliable, cost-effective components, stating, 'We're proud to support the CSA's initiative by offering a Canadian-designed, Canadian-built reaction wheel with over 20 years of flight heritage.'
This new reaction wheel will expand Rocket Lab's portfolio, catering to the needs of larger and more complex satellites. With its ability to handle significant moments of inertia, the wheel will enable the company to serve a growing market segment, solidifying its position as an end-to-end space systems provider. Since acquiring Sinclair Interplanetary in 2020, Rocket Lab has significantly expanded its Canadian operations, designing and delivering top-tier satellite attitude determination and control hardware for various orbits, including Low Earth Orbit, Geostationary, and even lunar and Martian missions.
This project highlights Rocket Lab's commitment to innovation and its role in advancing Canada's space industry. As the company continues to push the boundaries of space technology, it remains a key player in the global space market, offering reliable and affordable solutions for satellite missions.
