The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) in Brisbane, Australia, has announced the departure of its associate concertmaster, Alan Smith.
Smith joined the QSO in 1995 as concertmaster, following prior roles as associate concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and concertmaster of the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra.
Throughout his time with the QSO, he appeared as a soloist, delivering notable performances in triple concertos by Benjamin Frankel and Beethoven. He also appeared at notable events such as the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville in 2002 and 2003, and served as a soloist at the Energex Brisbane Festival in 2004, where he performed alongside Nigel Kennedy—an appearance that led to further collaborations with the renowned violinist.
In 2011, Smith stepped down from the role of concertmaster to pursue broader musical opportunities while continuing in the position of associate concertmaster. He has also been a frequent guest concertmaster with the Adelaide and West Australian symphony orchestras and has served as concertmaster with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
The QSO honored him on social media, noting: Alan brought warmth and precision to every performance, from the first rehearsal to the final bow. He freely offered his time, talent, and mentorship with grace. His artistry, leadership, and generosity have left a lasting impact on both the Orchestra and Queensland’s broader musical landscape.
Alan helped raise the standard for all of us—a true, enduring kind of legacy within an orchestra.
As concertmaster Natsuko Yoshimoto reflected, “Here’s to you, Alan—a genuine legend, a gentleman, a consummate professional, and a wonderful colleague and friend.”
Though his departure is sad, the orchestra is confident he will continue to excel in his passions: more chamber music, more opportunities for teaching and sharing knowledge, and more time with family. Thank you for everything, Alan.
