Oscar De La Hoya has always aimed high, even when his own era boasted legendary challengers and fierce rivalries. As the face of Golden Boy Promotions and a culture-wide icon of “Clapback Thursday,” De La Hoya’s career reads like a who’s who of boxing greatness. The 1992 Olympic gold medalist paired a dazzling smile and movie-star looks with relentless ambition and world-class talent, earning him multiple world titles and a place among the sport’s all-time greats.
In the twilight of his career, De La Hoya set his sights on the toughest challenges: he moved up to middleweight to take on the undisputed champion Bernard Hopkins, pushed the limits of his craft against Floyd Mayweather, and then tested himself against the ferocious Manny Pacquiao. Each encounter ended in defeat, yet the willingness to pursue the best remained a constant hallmark of his reputation as a fearless competitor.
Interestingly, though, De La Hoya’s answer to who presented his greatest test of skill did not name Hopkins, Mayweather, or Pacquiao. In a conversation with The Ring for their Best I Faced series, he highlighted another all-time great who defined technical mastery: Pernell Whitaker.
“Whitaker was one of the most skillful fighters in any generation,” De La Hoya said. “He could stay right in front of you and still slip your punches. He wasn’t a runner; he stood his ground and knew how to slip. Whitaker could knock you out too—punching power, skill, IQ—Whitaker had it all. He’s probably one of the all-around best boxers I faced.”
De La Hoya’s victory over Whitaker, on April 12, 1997, earned him the WBC welterweight title and cemented his status as a four-weight world champion. The judges’ cards—115-111 and two times 116-110—sparked controversy, with Whitaker feeling he deserved the decision. De La Hoya spoke of offering a rematch, though it never materialized.
