A revolutionary transformation is taking place in Iganga, Uganda, and it all starts with something as simple as a sanitation block. But here's where it gets controversial: this seemingly small project could have a massive impact on the community's health and education.
The Bunyiiro Primary School, a vital hub of learning, has been gifted with new toilets, thanks to the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) and the Community Chest of Korea. This initiative is more than just a construction project; it's a strategic move to enhance sanitation and hygiene for the school's learners.
The benefits are twofold: not only will pupils and staff enjoy a safer, healthier environment, but the school's infrastructure will also be significantly upgraded. And this is the part most people miss: these improvements are crucial for the well-being of children and can have a lasting impact on their education and future.
Hajara Harriet Kibwika, the headmistress, emphasizes the importance of the new sanitation block. She believes it will reduce open defecation, improve attendance, and protect the dignity of learners, especially girls. Good sanitation, she says, is the foundation of a productive learning environment.
The school administration is grateful for the support and hopes this project will attract further attention to their ongoing development needs. And their vision doesn't stop there. The wider initiative aims to sign more Memoranda of Understanding to continue capacity building, raise WASH awareness, and construct additional handwashing facilities with water filters.
Dohoon Kim, Acting Country Representative of the KOFIH Uganda Office, sees these WASH investments as a tangible demonstration of their partnership with the Government of Uganda and the people of Iganga. The Busoga WASH Project, operating under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025, facilitates close collaboration with local governments, health facilities, and schools to combat waterborne diseases across the region.
Sang-hoon Jung, Senior Advisor and Health Program Specialist, emphasizes the value of their collaboration with the Ugandan government and Iganga District. Together, they are fostering healthier communities and strengthening the bond between the people of Korea and Uganda.
