Measles Exposure Alert: Potential Sites Identified at Manitoba Ag Days (2026)

Last month’s Manitoba Ag Days at the Keystone Centre in Brandon has been flagged by public health officials as a potential site of measles exposure, raising alarms for attendees.

But here’s where it gets controversial: the implications of such a warning extend beyond just those present at the event.

To stay informed and protect yourself, it’s crucial to pay attention to your health if you were at the Ag Days or visited associated locations like hotels, restaurants, and shops in the area. According to a media bulletin released by the province on Friday, individuals who attended this event should be vigilant for symptoms until February 13.

Specifically, if you were at Ag Days on January 20 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., monitor for signs of illness until February 11; those who were there during the same hours on January 21 and January 22 should keep an eye on their health until February 12 and 13, respectively.

Additionally, if you visited the Great Western Roadhouse located in the Canad Inns Destination Centre on January 20 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., you need to be alert for symptoms until February 11. Those who participated in the Agriculture in the Classroom event at the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba Dome Building on January 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. should also monitor their health until February 11, with those attending on January 21 and 22 needing to watch for symptoms until February 12 and 13, respectively.

Public health officials are urging anyone who visited these venues during the specified times to review their vaccination history against measles, specifically the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) or MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella) vaccines.

The measles vaccine is particularly recommended for individuals born in 1970 or later who have not received the vaccine and have never contracted measles. However, certain groups should avoid vaccination—namely infants under six months, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

If you develop any symptoms, it is advised that you self-isolate at home and contact your healthcare provider promptly, informing them about your potential exposure to measles. Furthermore, other unimmunized individuals in your household should limit their interactions with others until guidance is received from healthcare professionals regarding the symptomatic individual.

Symptoms of measles typically manifest between seven to twenty-one days after exposure. Initial signs may include fever, runny nose, fatigue, irritability, and red eyes. Notably, small white spots can appear inside the mouth or throat. A few days later, a distinctive red, blotchy rash emerges, starting on the face and spreading downward across the body.

Complications from measles can be serious, including ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, and encephalitis, which is an inflammation of the brain.

It’s important to note that measles spreads through respiratory droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The contagious period lasts from four days before the rash appears to four days after it develops. The disease poses a greater risk to infants and young children, sometimes leading to life-threatening conditions.
