The Rijksmuseum, the nation's premier art and history museum, unveiled the painting, titled 'Vision of Zacharias in the Temple', after a two-year investigation.
This masterpiece, painted by the 27-year-old Rembrandt in 1633, had been hidden away in a private collection for decades. It was only in 1962 that experts declared it not a Rembrandt, leading to its acquisition by a mysterious collector. But the Rijksmuseum's director, Taco Dibbits, revealed that the owner had initially sought confirmation of its Dutch origin, unaware of its true value.
The painting, depicting the biblical story of Zacharias and Gabriel, showcases Rembrandt's mastery of light and shadow. A detailed examination, including high-tech scans and comparisons with other works, confirmed its authenticity. The wood panel, pigments, and painting techniques all matched those used by Rembrandt in his other creations.
This discovery adds to the approximately 350 known Rembrandt paintings, sparking hope that more hidden gems may be waiting to be uncovered. As Dibbits noted, the quest for new Rembrandt works is akin to finding a needle in a haystack, but the joy of such a discovery is unparalleled.
