Rahm accuses the DP World Tour of pressuring players
Jon Rahm has accused the DP World Tour of "extorting players" as he explains why he chose not to join a settlement arrangement that would allow LIV Golf competitors to compete in both tours’ events.
Last month, eight players received releases from the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) to compete in LIV Golf events this year. The deal would keep them as DP World Tour members and keep them eligible for Ryder Cup selection.
The waiver involved paying outstanding fines reportedly around £2.5 million for appearing in LIV events without the DP World Tour’s permission, dropping all ongoing appeals, and agreeing to participate in a set number of DP World Tour events.
Spaniard Rahm, a former world number one and two-time major champion, said he would not agree to those terms—though he indicated a potential middle ground if the required number of DP World Tour events were reduced.
"I don’t know what game they’re trying to play right now," he said.
"But it seems they’re using us to cash in on our influence in the sport, fining us and seeking to benefit from what we bring to the table, in a way that pressures players."
He continued: "I even told them, ironically, cut it down to four events—the minimum that’s allowed—and I’ll sign tonight. They haven’t agreed to that. I simply refuse to play six events. That’s not what the rules say, and that’s not what I’m prepared to do."
The DP World Tour declined to comment when contacted by the BC.
