Bold opening: A deadly blaze at a Goa nightclub exposes a tangled web of ownership and accountability, with investigators racing to pin down who was really in charge.
India’s Goa Police have detained Ajay Gupta, a co-owner of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub, following a devastating fire at the Arpora venue that claimed 25 lives. Gupta, who was picked up after a Lookout Circular was issued, asserted that he merely held a partnership and had no involvement in the club’s day-to-day operations. “I am just a partner. I don’t know anything,” he told authorities as the arrest unfolded.
Meanwhile, investigators are expanding their search for the club’s principal owners, brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, who reportedly fled to Phuket just hours after the blaze. Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice to assist in locating them, and Goa Police are coordinating with the CBI and Interpol. Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant indicated a team would be sent to Thailand to secure their extradition.
Earlier, the Bureau of Immigration informed police that the Luthras boarded IndiGo flight 6E 1073 from Delhi to Phuket on Sunday morning. A regional passport office notice has been issued seeking reasons why their passports should not be impounded. A separate Blue Corner Notice has also been issued against property owner Surinder Kumar Khosla, a British national. Gupta faces imminent transport back to Goa for formal arrest once procedures are completed.
Five further individuals connected to the nightclub—chief general manager Rajiv Modak, general manager Vivek Singh, bar manager Rajiv Singhania, gate manager Riyanshu Thakur, and employee Bharat Kohli—have already been arrested.
Reaction from officials has been swift. Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte described the fire as a “very tragic episode” and stressed the necessity of accountability, urging a thorough inquiry that yields a factual report. In a related move, district authorities recently demolished part of the Romeo Lane restaurant in Vagator, owned by the Luthras, citing illegal construction.
Commentary and implications: This case underscores the importance of clear ownership structures and robust safety compliance in nightlife venues. As authorities pursue primary suspects abroad, questions arise about how responsibilities are allocated among partners, managers, and owners, and what due diligence is required to prevent such disasters.
Think about it: should business owners bear the full burden of safety compliance, or does shared ownership complicate accountability in ways that can hinder swift justice?
