Sweden's Unique Offer: A Cabin in the Woods with a Twist
In a unique tourism initiative, Skåne, Sweden, is offering travelers a chance to experience a serene forest cabin stay with a twist. The catch? Participants must keep noise levels below a certain threshold, ensuring a peaceful and quiet environment for all.
This campaign, called 'Stay Quiet', aims to address the often-overlooked issue of noise pollution. Project manager Josefine Nordgren highlights the impact of constant noise on our well-being, citing studies that link it to increased stress, disrupted sleep, and negative effects on both physical and mental health.
The initiative's goal is to provide an immersive experience in nature, free from everyday distractions and noise.
The 'Stay Quiet' Challenge: A Cabin in the Woods
Visit Skåne launched an international call for participants, attracting over 200 applications from various countries. Three pairs of applicants were selected, including Johanna Holm, a German teacher-in-training, and her sister.
The cabin stay's only rule was to maintain sound levels below 45 decibels, similar to a library or quiet office. Holm found this manageable, even though whispering was necessary due to communication challenges with her sister.
A Peaceful Retreat
Holm and her sister spent their time in the cabin engaging in various activities without noise. They cooked over fires, admired the autumn foliage, and engaged in reflective practices. Creative tasks, such as writing letters to their future selves, were also part of the experience.
The Power of Silence
The stay proved to be a transformative experience for Holm. She felt a sense of calm, happiness, and empowerment, which she now wants to replicate in her daily life. Holm's newfound appreciation for silence has inspired her to seek similar quiet retreats for herself and her loved ones.
Visit Skåne's Approach
Nordgren emphasizes that the campaign's focus is on awareness rather than strict silence. The goal is to help guests understand the interaction between their sounds and nature's tranquility, and the feeling of true stillness.
A New Perspective on Travel
The initiative showcases a different approach to travel, one that emphasizes sustainability and human well-being. Nordgren believes that Skåne offers a rare opportunity to experience true stillness, and she wants to promote the idea that silence is a valuable resource, supporting both personal growth and sustainable tourism.
