Air Force Baseball Dominates Penn State in Season Opener
In a thrilling display of dominance, the Air Force Falcons kicked off their 2026 baseball season with a bang, run-ruling Penn State by a score of 15-3. This victory marks a significant milestone, as it's the first time Air Force has tasted success on opening day since 2020.
The game, held at Goodyear Stadium, witnessed an incredible performance by the Falcons, who showcased their offensive prowess and solid pitching.
Pitching Performance: A Career-Best Effort
Gaines Estridge, the right-handed pitcher, stole the show with a career-high six innings on the mound. He tied his personal best with four strikeouts and, most impressively, didn't allow a single run! Estridge's dominant performance set the tone for the entire game.
Making his collegiate debut, Aiden Poe stepped in during the seventh inning, allowing three runs in his one inning of work. Marcus Downing then closed the game with a flawless eighth inning, striking out one batter and not giving up a single hit.
Offensive Explosion: Falcons' Bats Come Alive
Offensively, the Falcons were on fire, scoring a whopping 15 runs on 14 hits and driving in 10 RBIs. Luke Elmore led the charge with four hits and four RBIs, a truly impressive performance. Kayden Bradshaw and Wyatt Hanoian also contributed, each adding two RBIs to the team's total.
Freshman Brooks Burdine made his mark early, leading off the second inning with the first hit of the 2026 season for the Falcons. It was a single to shortstop, and it also marked his first collegiate hit - a memorable moment for the young player.
Key Moments: How the Falcons Built Their Lead
After a scoreless first three innings, Air Force broke the ice in the top of the fourth. Burdine drew a walk and stole his first career base, advancing to third on a bunt from Elmore. Bradshaw then delivered a clutch single to left center, scoring Burdine for his first career run as a Falcon. With the bases loaded, Elmore was thrown out at the plate, but an errant throw allowed Bradshaw to score. A throwing error following a pitching change enabled Niednagel to cross the plate, capping off a productive inning for the Falcons.
Estridge responded with a dominant bottom half of the fourth, retiring the side in order and striking out two Penn State batters.
The Falcons continued to build their lead in the fifth inning, extending it to 6-0. Back-to-back singles from Burdine and Elmore set the stage, and Bradshaw knocked in Burdine with his second RBI single of the night. A double steal then allowed Elmore to score, and another Penn State throwing error brought Bradshaw home.
Air Force added two more runs in the sixth, with Hanoian and Christian Taylor scoring on a two-out double by Elmore down the left-field line.
In the seventh, the Falcons pushed their lead to 11-0. Tripp Garrish and Hanoian singled, putting runners on the corners. A Penn State error allowed a run to score, and Elmore followed with a two-RBI hit to close out the scoring in the frame.
Penn State managed to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on two RBI singles and an RBI groundout, but it wasn't enough to stop the Air Force momentum.
Run Rule Victory: Falcons Seal the Deal
Air Force sealed their dominant win with a four-run eighth inning, invoking the run rule. Ben Niednagel singled to open the frame, followed by walks from T.J. Oster and Garrish, loading the bases. Hanoian doubled to drive in two runs, Taylor added a sacrifice fly, and Burdine recorded his first career RBI with a single to center field, making the final score 15-3.
